Respecting the structure of an eighty-year-old, two-story house while simultaneously adapting the spaces to meet the client’s living needs was an interesting challenge from the start. The first step was to restructure and reinforce all the walls and surfaces to add new volumes. Then, we reflected on the possibilities of the terraced plot, which has a natural three-meter slope between the sidewalk and the garden, complicating access to the various spaces of the house.
The solution was to create a series of patios that connect, illuminate, and ventilate the different areas. A central patio helped separate the main volume from the natural terracing, prevent moisture, and take advantage of the western light. We placed the bedrooms and public areas of the house facing the garden, framing the views towards the enormous trees that are over a hundred years old.
The living and dining rooms, with double-height ceilings and large garden views, became focal points where wrought iron sunshades control the play of light inside. A fireplace separates these spaces from a family room with a breakfast nook, serving as a more intimate and secluded area from the public zone. On the other side, the terrace integrates seamlessly with the garden thanks to sliding doors that protect the interiors from the rain when necessary. The distribution of the bedrooms on the upper floor also prioritized the garden trees. Bone tones, oak woodwork, and soft lighting help balance and bring serenity to the spaces.
